The books we leave behind
A secondhand book contains more than the words its author put there.
An inscription, a folded corner, a pencilled question: these are invitations from a reader we will probably never meet. We inherit a conversation already in progress.
To keep a book is one kind of affection. To let it go, with a little evidence of having loved it, might be another.
